In an attempt to move away from an oil-based economy, Saudi Arabia has launched the Vision 2030 program. CNBC reports that the country aims to stand among the top five tourist destinations in the world, as part of this economic diversification initiative. Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman hopes that by 2030, the Saudi Arabian tourism sector will be able to contribute 10% of the kingdom’s GDP, says an article on CNBC.

Entering Saudi Arabia Via Aiports

There are 35 airports in Saudi Arabia. However, not all of them have the infrastructure to support the influx of tourists that the launch of the e-visa for 49 countries is likely to bring. For now, only four airports are well equipped to handle the foreign nationals who will travel with the tourist e-visa:

  1. King Khalid International Airport (RUH) – Riyadh
  2. Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz International Airport (MED) – Madinah
  3. King Fahd International Airport (DMM) – Dammam
  4. King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) – Jeddah

These entry ports also allow visa on arrival, after confirming that you belong from one of the 49 countries eligible for the electronic visa. The visa process can be completed either through self-service machines or the passport offices.

In case you are travelling to Saudi Arabia via UAE, you will be required to have a transit visa. The UAE transit visa is mandatory for all citizens who are not eligible for a visa on arrival. The visa can be issued for 48 hours and 96 hours. The former is free of charge and the latter costs AED 50. For both visas, you will require a passport with minimum validity of three months from the date of arrival and onward journey tickets.

Entering Saudi Arabia Via Land

The King Fahd Causeway connects Bahrain to Saudi Arabia. This causeway is constructed in three segments – Al-Aziziyyah to the Border Station on Passport Island, Border Station to Nasan Island in Bahrain and Nasan Island to Al Jasra on the Bahrain main island.
